April showers will bring May flowers! Planting season is upon us in Montgomery County. It is a great time to start your garden, and if you haven’t done so, to start a compost bin! Compost is decayed organic material used as a plant fertilizer.
The easiest way is to get yourself a plastic tote bin (with lid), drill lots of holes in the bin/lid and leave it in a sunny spot. Put a layer of dead leaves or grass on the bottom, and fill it with all your fruit and veggie waste, egg shells and coffee grinds (and coffee filters if you use those). The decaying leaves and grass is necessary to keep the compost pile from smelling, so remember to add as necessary. Every few days toss the pile and mix it up. Add some water if it hasn’t rained much. That’s it. The heat from the sun, and bugs that get in it will break it down into a rich black soil, great for planting! You can add to the compost bin all year long, but the colder months take longer to break down the material.
