The new school year is coming! The school supply lists are ready for distribution, and can normally be found in the stores, near the school supplies. With Tennessee having a higher tax, and a tax on all items, school shopping can become costly. To help off set some of the cost for parents, the state of Tennessee has an annual tax free weekend. Clothing, school supplies, and computers can be bought tax free between July 28 and July 30th. There are some limitations though. All clothing and school supplies that are priced under $100 per item, will be tax free. Computers will be tax free under $1500. There are no special stipulations to buy these items during that time (for example: you do not have to prove you have a student, or are a student). Please see below to see a copy of the elementary school supply list.
Sometimes, the added burden of school supplies and clothing are too much for a parent/guardian, even with the help of the tax free weekend. If this is the case, be aware that there are organizations that can help you. Many time churches will have donations to help families.
