Hurricane Harvey began as a Tropical Storm, that eventually picked up strength while traveling through the Gulf of Mexico. It hit Corpus Christi TX this past Friday evening. At that point it was considered a category 4 hurricane with winds over 100 miles an hour. It has since dropped down to a category 3. One of the reasons why Hurricane Harvey is so devastating is the amount of rain it has brought. Once the hurricane hit land, it basically stalled and is expected to have torrential rain for days. Roadways are turning into rivers! It is believed that some areas will have over 50 inches of rain by the time it is over.
The Tennessee River Chapter of the Red Cross has begun sending local volunteers to help the victims in Texas. Other states are also sending their local American Red Cross volunteers as well. The American Red Cross is looking to deploy an estimated 4,000 Volunteers to help. If you are interested in donating or volunteering to help the American Red Cross, please contact your local Chapter.
