Do You Know What Home Insurance Covers?

Do you know what your homeowners insurance actually covers? A basic homeowners insurance policy (HO-1) Will cover your home and possessions if damaged/destroyed by:

  • Fire
  • Lightning
  • Windstorm (unless otherwise specified)
  • Hail (unless otherwise specified)
  • Explosion
  • Riots
  • Civil commotion
  • Aircraft
  • Vehicles
  • Smoke
  • Vandalism (unless otherwise specified)
  • Malicious mischief
  • Theft
  • Volcanic eruption (where applicable)

There are other policies that are upgraded (HO-2). Some states will only let you buy upgraded plans. These plans protect you from the above as well as:

  • Falling objects
  • The weight of ice, snow, or sleet
  • Flooding from your appliances, plumbing, HVAC, or fire-protection sprinkler system
  • Damage to electrical parts
  • Glass breakage
  • Abrupt collapse

There are also additional policies available and you should contact your home owner policy to learn more.

So we know what homeowners insurance covers, but what doesn’t it cover? Typical policies do not cover:

  • When things happen due to not maintaining your home
  • Hurricanes
  • Floods
  • Earthquakes
  • Mudslides
  • Landslides
  • Sinkholes
  • War
  • Nuclear accidents
